United’s Elite Buy-Up Offer is Simply One I Cannot Refuse

January 30, 2015 by Angelina Aucello 4 Comments

Yesterday I received a message in my inbox from United saying that I could “enjoy Premier Gold status” for 2015. It read:

Thank you for flying with us last year. As a valued MileagePlus® member, you are eligible for a limited-time opportunity to ensure Premier® Gold status for 2015. In addition, you have a unique chance to jumpstart your Premier qualifying activity for 2016 status.

As a Premier 1K in 2014, that has qualified for Gold in terms of PQM requirement, but not PQD spend, I initially thought they were granting me a PQD waiver as a “soft landing” from 1K.

Too bad I clicked on the link. I learned that I could purchase the status for the very reasonable price of $1,999. What a bargain!! (note the sarcasm throughout the entire post).

I’m hearing that certain MileagePlus members are getting targeted for different buy-up offers.

I’d have no problem “buying” up for maybe $100-$200 at most. But for $2000?!? Now that’s the chuckle of the day.

What was your “buy-up” offer?

Qualified Premier Silver, but was short ~6-700 PQMs due to a flight not crediting correctly (over $5k PQD). Buy-up offer was $400. United ultimately credited the flight and I was blessed with Premier Gold based on that. $400 is more reasonable, but rediculous given I was 99% there. Still better than buying PQMs on my last flight of 2014 (United would have forced me to buy 5,000 PQMs @$800).

Yes, me too. I had the miles, but not the $$. $600 for Silver. No thanks.

Angelina, why did you say in your email subject line that United’s offer is “simply one I cannot refuse” when you did? Just curious?
