Flight Review: Singapore Airlines A380 Suites Class Frankfurt to New York

January 15, 2016 by Angelina Aucello 4 Comments

Not too long ago, I traveled on an open-ended journey that started with a sudden desire to fly in Lufthansa’s first class cabin for the first time. After a nice 12-hour layover in Frankfurt to experience Lufthansa’s impressive First Class Terminal and lounges, I continued on to Berlin for 2 night,s and then booked a spontaneous ticket to Marrakesh, Morocco for a few nights, before returning home via Frankfurt in Singapore Suites class (surprise availability!).

This SQ Suites flight was my 2nd time experiencing the product, and it’s one of the best. My first time flying in Singapore Airlines suites class was in 2013 to Australia with Dad. It was actually an accident because I had redeemed 80,000 United miles for a first class seat on the 777, but there ended up being a surprise aircraft swap, and I was rebooked on the A380 (!!!).

Booking the Award:

Availability is hard to come by for SQ suites, but for some reason, there was surprise availability so I snagged a seat using 57,375 Singapore Airlines Krisflyer miles. The Krisflyer program is a transfer partner of Citi Thank You Points, Ultimate Rewards, and Membership Rewards.

When you book using the Singapore website, you get a 15% discount of the prices on the award chart. So, for instance:

  • New York – Frankfurt in suites class is 57,375 miles one-way.
  • Houston – Moscow in first class is 57,375 miles one-way.
  • San Francisco – Hong Kong is 70,125 miles one-way.

Singapore does add fuel surcharges to awards, but it was no where near the cost of the fuel surcharge I paid for my Lufthansa first class flight (whatever the cost of a fuel surcharge would be on an equivalent paid ticket).

I transferred points from my Business Platinum Card® from American Express OPEN. Other Membership Rewards cards include The Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, and the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can also transfer Starwood points from the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express into the Krisflyer program at the rate of 20,000 SPG points = 25,000 Krisflyer miles. Both cards come with a sign-up bonus of 25,000 points after meeting the minimum spend requirement.

The Flight Experience

Before boarding, a Singapore Airlines representative escorted myself and some of the other first class passengers to the gate for pre-boarding.

There are 12 first class suites, including two middle seats that convert into a “double bed in the sky”. I sat in seat 3K and was immediately offered a pre-departure champagne. “Ms. Aucello, would you prefer Dom or Krug this morning” is not a question you hear every day.

…and eventually made my way to the Dom Perignon and some Chardonnay.

Before take off, I was given my Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kit and pajamas. There were different amenity kits for men and women and they included a full-size bottle of perfume/cologne. I was pretty impressed with the amenity kit. The pajamas were also extremely comfortable.

The Food/Menu

The food on the flight was pretty phenomenal to say the least. I chose to “Book the Cook“, meaning I could pre-select my gourmet main courses ahead of time. I went with the lobster as my main course, and it was simply delicious. The two desserts were also out of this world.

The Bed

After eating, I decided to get some rest for a few hours. The bed is super comfortable and actually really large (it felt a bit larger than Lufthansa’s bed). The door on the suite closes for privacy as well.

Hello NYC

Overall I loved my experience on the Singapore Suites. The service was exceptional and the food was really good. For 57,375 miles, you can’t go wrong!

Have you flown on SQ suites recently? How did your experience compare?

Great review! I’m on the waitlist for this flight in early June and I’m still 2 months away from getting the Citi TY Premier bonus needed to book it! Nothing like playing the long game…
