National Emerald Club and I both have something very special in common – 25 years! I’ll be turning 25 in April, but why wait until next month to celebrate? Let’s have a little party right now with National Car Rental’s Emerald Club, who is celebrating their 25th anniversary this month, and is inviting us to celebrate with them!
In honor of their exciting milestone, National’s Emerald Club is having a “Blast From the Past” contest on their Facebook page, where you can share your photos, videos, and stories from 25 years ago for a chance to win a $25 Visa gift card. They’re also sponsoring this blog contest by providing me with 3 great prizes to give away to some lucky readers.
National offered me a “Go Like a Pro†gift basket (filled with a National tumbler, a National embossed leather writing pad, a National pen set, a weekend duffle bag and a driving kit) in exchange for running this contest on my blog, but I prefer to give this prize away to a reader instead.
In total there will be 3 prizes:
1 Grand Prize – The National “Go Like a Pro” gift basket, as described above
and
2 Runner-Up Prizes: $25 Visa Gift Card
Entering is simple, and there are two ways to do so:
1. Retweet or share your favorite Just Another Points Traveler blog post on Twitter.
2. Comment below sharing your favorite memory of 1987 – What were YOU doing 25 years ago? If you’re like me and weren’t born yet, then you can enter by sharing your first travel memory.
All winners will be chosen at random from the entry methods discussed above on Saturday, March 10 at 9 am EST. I’ll be choosing 1 random $25 gift card runner-up winner from the Twitter retweets/shares. The grand prize and 2nd $25 Visa gift card winners will be chosen from the comment stories below. One comment entry and one Twitter entry per person please.
Good luck & I look forward to traveling back in time with you!
Travel memory: fishing from the balcony of a hotel room overlooking a lake.
Must have been roaming somewhere in the Middle East along with my parents
This was the year I graduated college.
Entering my freshman year of college. Too poor to travel!
In 1987, it was my 1st visit to US and became a PROUD Gator:)

In 1987, I was just learning to talk at the ripe age of 2 years.
First travel memory was Disney World!
Listening to some great 80’s music with my “big hair”!

In 1987, I was still “young”. Now that I retired, I wish I had travelled more when I was young…
I was almost two… so my first travel memory was a week-long vacation to Beijing after I finished my 6th grade.
25 Years ago, I was almost 6 years old, and had rode in the family station wagon for the first time to Wisconsin.
In 1987 I took my first plane flight as an “adult”, JFK-LAX, then LAX-PHL return. The 6pm flight out of JFK didn’t board until around 10pm, making our arrival at LAX in the wee hours of the morning. The return flight to PHL stopped at JFK where we had a MX and sat on the tarmac for 3 hours. It’s only gotten better since then.
Let me see 25 years ago I had “six pack” abs..mow can’t see my toes!!
I was going back and forth to college
I was 11 years old and took one of my typical summer vacations with the family. That year was especially memorable for me as we drove from CT to Michigan and visited Battle Creek, Frankenmuth, Mackinac Island, and Traverse City.
Traveling around Europe with my parents
6 years old…probably was looking forward to flying from PHL-MSP-NRT on NW that summer
Traveled to Wildwood, NJ. Love the broadwalk
I just start learning to drive and I have not travelled anywhere 25 years back!
25 years ago I would have been two years old living a few blocks away from the ocean. I would have likely been on the beach at the time.
Travel Memory: Flying to Oregon with my little sister on our own. Our Mom was so nervous!
Studying most likely, and looking forward to not studying!
I was living in San Diego, a sophomore in High School just partying and going to concerts of great bands like The Cure and Smiths!
OK – I was preganant with my second child… what an exciting part of my life!! Hard to believe that was 25 years ago…. at time I still feel 25 myself!!
starting second grade, into madonna and michael jackson
25 years ago – that is easy – school!
Travel Memory: Road trip with my parents & sisters from Vancouver to Reno. We stopped & stayed in many cities along the way but my favourite memory was a hotel in a small town in Washington state that had the best indoor pool. It wasn’t spectular or anything, just the fact that I had my parents and sisters with me.
I just started college 25 years ago.
25 years ago, home daycare/4 kids/4-H volunteer/PTA volunteer….today, children, 1 grandchild and still volunteering :-)
25 years ago…had never been on a plane and the only memories i have are driving across the country with the whole family in a packed car.
My first travel memory was traveling around the country on a road trip 25 years with my dad and brother.
My memory is so bad that trying to remember 25 days ago is a challenge! Evidently I didn’t do anything illegal then as I haven’t spent the last 25 in jail :)
i was only 2 years old. my first memory is my family moving to US from India on a Lufthansa flight.
I had graduated frim college and embarked on a 12 day train trip across the usa !,
I was 2, going on 3 in 1987. I started nursery school that year–and traveled to San Francisco with my mom.
I was in preschool. Our family took a vacation to the same resort every summer. Some of my first memories are from there.
I was born that year! My mom took me to Disney World.
Probably just learning to walk…
Crashing my bike into the same car over and over in the cul-de-sac. The guy was very understanding.
I was enjoying my senior year in highschool! Listening to Prince, Culture Club, the Cure, Michael Jackson, Echo and the Bunnymen, Beastie Boys, Whitney Houston, the Smiths, Janet Jackson, Simple Minds, Madonna, Wham!, U2…etc.
In 1987, I was in the eight grade looking forward to going to high school. It was a scary and exciting time!
i was watching sesame street
Easy – honeymoon in Seattle.
I was chasing after my first child, who would later be quite spoiled as a teenager by the upgrades that my hotel elite status got for our family.
Planning my wedding with my wife to be!
touring the usa after having just graduated college
I was about 15 then..probably road trip to the jersey shore
1987 was a very good year for me and the first year that enabled me to begin my travel journeys…
I earned my drivers license that year and began regular road trips in my sporty 1978 Datsun 280Z. It was small, two seat coupe, with very little room for luggage, let alone passengers… but that didn’t stop me.
That car travelled all over the east coast and Canada and back in the day, I was even able to cross the border with passengers stuffed in the truck — try that today!!
The car was sold a few years later, as I couldn’t fit a refrigerator in it (commutes to college) but was replaced with a better travel car, a beat up 4 wheel drive Subaru wagon.
Sure, air travel gets us there faster, but travel by car (or motorcyle ) is really the best way to travel as doing so allows us to slow down, see the scenery and meet the locals along the less traveled side roads…
First trip to Disney World! I was 4.
