Citi AAdvantage Cardholders: Check Your Junk Mail for Targeted Offers

October 15, 2012 by Angelina Aucello 9 Comments

Every now and then I look forward to receiving junk mail – especially if there’s free points and miles involved. Earlier this week I received a special invitation via mail to register my Citi AAdvantage Visa for a great targeted promotion. My promotion was for 10x American Airlines miles on eligible Amazon.com purchases and 3x AAdvantage miles on eligible holiday shopping purchases through December 31, 2012. The promotion is capped at 2,500 bonus miles.

While I don’t have an immediate need for anything at Amazon.com at the moment, the T+C states, “the Amazon.com offer is valid for purchases billed as Amazon.com transactions”. Without giving too much away, my first thought was to check to see if Amazon Payments billed as Amazon.com, but it does not; however, I do believe that the purchase of Amazon.com giftcards would count towards the bonus, so that’s the route I’ll be going with this. Does anyone have any previous experience with getting the 10x points to post from last quarter’s promotion?

If you’re a Citi AA cardholder, be on the lookout for your offer if you’ve be targeted. Some people have received their offer via email and others via mail. Which offer did you receive and how do you plan on taking advantage of it?

Most things you buy from Amazon have a 30 day return policy…. so maybe buy some stuff, hold on to it for a few weeks then return it and maybe get the points before then.
    .
I also use the Hawaiian shopping portal to earn 1 pt/$ on Amazon (kinda worthless but whatever)

Makes me wonder how come I never get this type of mail , junk or otherwise. Is there any trigger to get these bonus points?

Got a similar flyer on the mail yesterday. My promotion was for 9x AA miles on eligible Amazon.com purchases and 3x AA miles on eligible holiday shopping purchases through December 31, 2012. Not sure why any purchase not billed as Amazon.com would not qualify since you are buying from Amazon.com

@Veen: I hope you get it too!

@Jay: I rarely use the card so I think that’s why I get targeted LOL

@Grant: Great tips – will try!!

@David: I think the less frequently you use the card, the more likely you’ll get targeted.

@Santastico: Happy to hear you also were targeted!

Agree with Angelina that “the less you use it, the more likely you will be targeted”. My Citi AAdvantage is my oldest credit card and the one with the highest credit limit I have and I used it for everything. However, after moving to a Delta hub airport I did not see the value in getting more and more AA miles so I stopped using it but kept it because of the age of the card and high credit limit which I think helps my credit score. Also, one of the reasons I stopped using the card was that I wasn’t targeted for any type of promotions and was only getting 1 mile per $1 spending. After a while without using the card I started getting flyers on the mail with targeted promotions. I wish credit card companies would recognize loyal customers and offer them incentives to keep using the card but with Citi they couldn’t care less.

FatWallet also has bonuses through their shopping portal on several Amazon categories
