The United / Vinesse Wine Offer is a Pretty Good Deal

March 10, 2014 by Angelina Aucello 10 Comments

I love wine; and I love saving money on wine. After purchasing 8 bottles of wine this weekend at about $12 a pop for a family gathering (which ultimately turned into a giant app-o-rama… more on that later), I decided that it might be time to consider joining a wine club… even for only a shipment or two just to replenish my stock. With that being said, this offer couldn’t have come at a better time:

a screenshot of a websiteThe catch is this: you get 2,000 miles with your first shipment and then 4,500 with your 2nd shipment (plus a United Club pass as well). Still, considering that United sells their miles at $35 per 1,000, this is still a pretty decent offer even if you cancel after the first shipment.

Back in the good ‘ole days of the US Airways Grand Slam promotion, I believe I purchased a Vinesse wine shipment for a “hit”, and from what I remember, I was very satisfied with the outcome. Overall, I felt it was a good deal, so I am feeling pretty confident about ordering again.

Have you ever joined a wine club or ordered a shipment of wine for promotions such as “free miles”? If so, which wine club are you part of?

So $42 gets 2000 miles and 6 bottles of wine generally considered mediocre at best. Maybe a decent deal, but hard to claim it a great one. And then $90ish + shipping for the second purchase. Probably more than the points are worth.

Plus United points can easily be purchased for less than $35/1000.

I am struggling to see where this is a good deal.

My kids got me one of these club deals for Father’s Day last year. Besides collecting miles and points, my other hobby is wine. While I liked the ‘thinking out of the box’ idea, I was disappointed to have a case of cheap wine in the house. Well, surprise surprise. This low end wine is actually drinking well(to wine snobs like me). It’s what we call QPR – quality price ratio.

You could do a lot worse at retail. Have fun and drink up.

@Wandering Aramean: $90 shipping on 2nd shipment?!? Yikes… looks like I’ll be canceling before that has a chance to hit. $42 for 6 bottles of wine sounds good to me though :)

I’ve done Vinesse, and found them to be almost impossible to cancel! They beg you to “stall for a year, stall for 6 months, stall for X…”. Wine Insiders, although, tended to be a decent deal as it’s a one time pop, usually for 2500 miles as I remember from the Grand Slam.

But, as you know, now I’m a Naked Wines girl all the way.

I am not snobby at all when it comes to wine, and have found a lot of wines around $15 that are fantastic! Nothing I had from Vinesse was even what I would call “good” in my okay/good/very good/fantastic/wow classification system. So consider it purchased points and let these wines out at the end of long evenings! If people can’t stand up straight they won’t be able to remember the wine…..

Not $90 in shipping but you don’t get the discount on shipping nor the per-bottle price. So it is $12-15/bottle plus shipping. There’s just no way you’re getting a decent value there.

As for getting decent wine at a good price in your neck of the woods, check out Wine Library. They’re a NJ-based company, have a huge selection at all price points and a very good website and staff if you go in to the store. I’m willing to bet that you can find some great options in the $7 range and do a lot better for it than the Vinesse. Plus you actually get to choose something you want to drink.

I had no problem cancelling Vinesse when I did it (back when you got full miles with the first shipment).

But I found the wine to be utterly undrinkable.

Even thought this is old, I will add my opinion. I don’t really drink wine. My girlfriend does. I did this to get the 6500 points. So it was 2500 for the first shipment, which was about 45.00. Then I waited for the second shipment, which was surprisingly about 127.00, then I planned to cancel. I procrastinated on cancelling, but called them and did it about 2 weeks after my second shipment. But I never got my 4000 miles for the second shipment. So I emailed to ask the status and they claimed that the terms said I had to remain an active member for 21 days after my second shipment to get my 4000 points. Really? What is the point of that. They don’t make any more money off me for that. Unless of course that was just enough time for them to force another shipment on me, or for someone to “forget” to cancel their membership so they can force another shipment on them.

Anyways, I am going to make a stink and I’m going to get my miles, but doing the math, 170 bucks for 12 bottles of wine (I don’t even know if they are good, GF said they are okay what she drank so far), and 2,500 miles = not worth it. But the extra bonus of 4,000 more miles kind of makes it worth it in my book. Just don’t let then pull a fast one on you like they did to me. This company is basically a scam, so just go into it understanding that. Look at the reviews online. They are horrible about the shenanigans they pull on customers. Can’t believe they are still in business.

Since this “DEAL” is still active I’ll just say, I got burned – Be aware and don’t cancel service sooner than 21 days:

Miles are awarded 21 days after the deposit date which you must remain active for.
Since the account was cancelled prior to these 21 days, you were not eligible from receiving the first set of bonus miles. This information can also be found in the Terms and Conditions at the bottom of the enrollment page.
