Free Boingo Wifi Access by Downloading an App

August 20, 2014 by Angelina Aucello 5 Comments

I love always being connected on the go, and I was thrilled to find that the AmEx Platinum cards now come with a free subscription to Boingo that gives you access to over 1 million wifi hotspots.

While I have a subscription thanks to American Express, I noticed this landing page recently while connecting at the gate at MIA:

Long story short, Boingo is offering complimentary wifi access to those without a subscription if they are willing to download one of their sponsor’s apps on their mobile device.

This is especially helpful when traveling abroad through an airport that does not offer free wifi, or if you would like to preserve data usage with your plan.

The Boingo APP is truly worthless and does not work. Readers tell me the same thing!

@rene: It does not ask you to download the Boingo app, on the Boingo landing page itself, it states an offer for a free session if you download one of their sponsor’s apps (such as amazon).

Ah missed that. I have just been so UN-impressed with Boingo that the idea of anything from them is – meh! ;-)

I have tried to use the “free” Boingo through my AMEX in France and China with varying degrees of “success”; i.e., it seldom works. When I get back to the US, I will have a word with AMEX about this.

At O’Hare, you just have to watch a quick video from a sponsor and you get free access for 30 minutes. No download necessary.
