Discussion: Missed-Flight Tantrums

October 6, 2014 by Angelina Aucello 6 Comments

It’s always entertaining seeing videos of people throwing tantrums when they miss their flights. Here’s one my brother sent my way this morning:

Note to self: shouting “Please Open!” 278 times while banging on the window, simultaneously waving a $20 bill doesn’t look like it works. He should have tried harder…

I truly look forward to the day when I encounter one of these incidents in real life. So far in my travels I haven’t come across a passenger gone wild.

Speaking of, have you seen any passengers “lose it” at the gate before? It’s Monday, and I’m in the mood for some good stories…

I don’t really see this as being “entertaining”. There’s no way to know where they’re headed and their desperation may indicate they have a long journey and we don’t know what circumstances made them get to the airport late. I don’t really see anything to laugh at here. I missed a flight once and it was devastating, because I missed the funeral of a dearly loved relative. I didn’t do what they did, I just broke down and cried. Eventually, I got to my destination, but it’s been over 15 years and I’m still bummed thinking about it…

I have to agree with the earlier poster. This is unfortunate and, not knowing the circumstances, we should not judge. To use it as fodder for entertainment says a lot about our culture in general.

You never know the full story. I was refused entry to a Swissair flight (yes, years ago) when I told the station manager I was rolling up in a wheelchair. I was able to walk and there was no reason to slam the door when I was 20 seconds away, delayed by malpensa staff.

Ok, maybe they do have a good reason for being so upset. But it’s still insanity. You can’t tell me they thought this was going to work.

I absolutely agree with the previous posters.

Perhaps you will see this as a bit of empathy training. Wisdom.

    It’s not “always entertaining”.

Agree with Laura, I was once like them before because my arrival flight had 1.5 hours delay. I was the first one who reached the gate, the bridge still pushed on but the gate door shut and no agent there. It was only 10 minute late, so I did something silly like that guys did in the vid in hope of a miracle but it didn’t happen. After all, there were like 20 that missed the flight.
