My husband did something really nice for me a few weeks ago. It was a dreadful, cold, and rainy day on a weekend that we made plans to take little Aiden pumpkin picking; based on the forecast, we accepted that fall festivities were just not in the cards that day.
Instead, my husband drove us to the mall;Â we got out and walked into Neiman Marcus, where he walked me to a pair of [rather pricey] designer heels that I had “liked” on Instagram a few days prior. He told the sales lady to get my size and bought them for me on the spot.
I was gleaming with joy to say the least!!!
There was one thing I couldn’t help myself from thinking about though (no, this time I didn’t think an Uber incident had happened)…
I silently thought to myself, “man, if only he had ordered these via an online shopping portal… and stacked it with the Chase Freedom 5x quarterly bonus… I’d legitimately have a free flight too”.
I secretly kept these precious heels in the box and refrained from wearing them just in case a nice portal bonus came my way. At times I thought I was being ridiculous and that I should just be grateful for the new shoes and the nice gesture.
But then… I ran the situation by some people at this past weekend’s Chicago Seminars and the general response was, “Are you NUTS?!? Go get the points!”
So here I am… Nordstrom has a 10x portal bonus + the 5x I would get with the Freedom quarterly bonus. I am one “submit-order”-click away from 14,925 points.
Am I a terrible person or did I do the smart thing? Have you ever done something like this before in the name of earning points?

I think the only insanity was paying $1000 for Rockstuds (if my math is correct). They are on Gilt and every other flash sale or barter site quite often. The points angle definitely makes it more palatable though so I kinda forgive you.

Really? If they are on Gilt then I might as well just return these all together and get them cheaper! Gilt has been pissing me off tons though… they have the worse CS and return policies!
Heather @ pass the dressing says
Yeh that’s definitely something to weigh. Nordstrom has some of the best CS in the country and you’d be giving that up to get potentially scratched/scuffed merchandise and unwilling/unhelpful CS reps.

PPS: In case it wasn’t clear, you should definitely re-order them from Nordstrom and return the in-store purchase. Or if you wanted to free up your Chase freedom for other quarterly bonus purchases, by $1000 in GCs from Staples first!

I found them on RueLala for $799 but they are sold out in all of the colors and in my size… blah. I am glad you let me know that they are being offered on other sites. I’ve stopped looking at sample sale sites because I was getting too nuts ordering things haha. Anyway, for a $200 savings I think I’ll take the 14,900 points :) :) You rock for letting me know they can be found cheaper elsewhere though!
Heather @ pass the dressing says
Ha! OMG, I completely didn’t realize that Rue was running a Valentino sale today. Dammit! Now you’ve got me looking!

I would get the points or get them cheaper. I’m sure your hubby will understand. They still the same shoes, you are just saving money.

You actually went to the people at the Chicago Sessions for advice on this? Did you expect any OTHER answer from them?
Angelina Aucello says
Made me feel more “normal” with my thinking :) Had a great time connecting with like-minded people!
Shanz says
Would’ve done what you did :)

As long as your hubby won’t ‘take offense to what you’re doing, then that’s cool. I can see how some guys may think you’re too points crazy for going through all that.
Suzy says
100% thru Nordstrom’s or less expensive site. Hope to see you again in FLL, NYC or YVR. :-)
Christina says
whenever I’m drooling over something my husband always asks, “is it cheaper online?” or “can you get points for it?” I know, I’m really lucky! I really hope you went for it!
Cristi says
This is amazing. Definitely keeping this trick in mind!
