I personally have had my American Express Business Platinum card since February 2013 and have always found it worth it to pay the $450 annual fee (especially since mine came with a sign-up bonus of 100,000 Membership Rewards). While I love the perks of the card, there’s one “perk” that I didn’t love so much – an automatic subscription to Departures Magazine.
I consciously go out of my way to unsubscribe to junk mail and catalogs using CatalogChoice.org. Not only does it minimize waste, it also frees my mind and home of unwanted clutter. I started receiving this bulky Departures Magazine publication every month, made with glossy hard-stock paper, and I felt guilt every time I tossed it.
Then, came along a message from a good friend of mine, Paul. He told me he was tired of receiving the unwanted magazine too and came across this thread on FatWallet where people were reporting receiving a $5 statement credit for canceling the subscription.
He called AmEx and was offered double – $10.
I immediately did the same but wasn’t so lucky. After speaking to 3 reps (in which I was involuntarily transferred to), and sending a secure message, my outcome was an end to my subscription… but without any statement credit.
I decided it is not worth my time to continue pursing a statement credit, but I am happy to report that I have done my part to minimize my environmental waste. Paul sent me a screen shot of his $10 credit, so YMMV.
Any other reports of receiving a statement credit?
