Update: DEAD
It’s been a while since I’ve booked a mistake fare been to Australia, so why not?
Currently bookable on Orbitz (and it’s fully refundable until 11 PM ET tomorrow, 2/17, so book now think later!)
It appears to be a glitch as tons Virgin Australia flights departing from Australia to the US seem to have tremendous price drops after they’re selected. This fare seems to be valid on select dates all the way up until late September 2016.
The price drops significantly from the $863 range to $148.56 when you narrow the results down to the Virgin Australia options. My booking has already ticketed, so it’s just a matter of seeing if these will stick. You can book the $148.56 one-way from Sydney to the US (or other Australian cities such as Melbourne and Brisbane), and figure out another way to get to Australia, or you can purchase the Los Angeles-Sydney one way for ~$443.
- Sydney to LAX: $148 one-way
- Sydney to LAX: $251 roundtrip (for SYD departures)
- Los Angeles to Sydney: $591 roundtrip ($148+$443)
I love that I can “book now and think later”. Now will I really go down under in April? It sure is tempting…
Hat Tip: Dans Deals
Who’s going to Australia on this deal?
I Love Dan says
Why is everyone giving HT to Dan?!?!?
Don’t HT Dan!
Dan is the parasitic bottom-feeder of the blogging world.
Dan regularly steals and hijacks other bloggers’ content and pawns it off as his own inserting his own referral and merchant links.

Thanks for pointing this out. I personally found out about this deal via Dan’s twitter while I happened to be scrolling through my feed.

That’s precisely my point though.
Dan’s content is never original.
No reason to ever send traffic to that scum.
You are better than that.

Hey psycho,
News flash: Dan and his followers find deals from the Internet and gives credit where and when it’s due but no, he’s not going to HT a loose ft thread or random no name Australian blog. Please remember to take your meds.
Signed,
A true Dan fan

Who to thank? So, I got in on it thanks to Dan too. In reading the deal, I didn’t notice him hat-tipping anyone else, so that may be a point for him to improve on. However, I’m appreciative that he brings deal like this to light as I hadn’t noticed them in the earlier postings as I don’t follow those.

A DD forum member encountered the fare on Google Flights and PMd me his find, asking to remain anonymous, hence the lack of HT.
I personally researched and found every date where the glitch existed.
Cheers and stay angry my friends,
Dan

Lol Dan.
I’m gonna be up all night tonight fixing all the wrong things on the internet.
To the government not getting control of our internet! Cheers!

It was posted well before then on Flyertalk and a couple of hours earlier on AFF. At least pay duty to the people that did all the real work, not parasites like you who pretend other people’s work is your own.
People like you make the community not want to share and everyone loses.

Congratulations on your bargain price fare! I would have totally jumped on that, if I hadn’t just booked my first trans-Pacific flight in first class (using points) for September.
How long do you planning on staying in Australia?
