The Chase Freedom has been a staple card in my wallet for years. It’s an amazing no-annual fee card that allows you to earn up to 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points per year (7,500 per quarter) with its quarterly rotating 5x bonus categories.
The points are transferable to many travel partners like United, Hyatt, Southwest, etc. when paired with a premium Ultimate Rewards card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve.
Today, Chase Freedom announced its Q3 5% cash back quarterly categories, which include gas stations and streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, Sling, Vudu, FuboTV, Apple Music, SiriusXM, Pandora and Spotify.
As always, you’ll have to activate the offer starting June 15 before you can earn 5x on qualifying purchases between July 1 and September 30.
Don’t forget that you still have until June 14 to activate and complete your bonus category spend for Q2 at grocery and home improvement stores by June 30 if you haven’t done so already.
Bottom Line
I always go out of my way each quarter to earn 7,500 points by maximizing the rotating 5% quarterly bonus categories with my Chase Freedom card, but Q3 categories are uninspiring in my opinion. I don’t spend money on streaming services (thanks to T-Mobile’s “Netflix on Us”), so a safe strategy for Q3 would be to find a gas station that sells other third-party merchant gift cards that I know my family would use.
What are your thoughts about the Q3 bonus categories?
Brutus says
5x on gas is awesome, especially during the summer.
Frank Doyle says
Not sure what makes a bonus category “inspiring”…
Anyway, I’m thrilled with the categories.
James says
Not happy here seeing this was a q1 category. I never have to buy gas and most gas stations don’t sell other gift cards. Only thing I’ll use it for is Netflix. Discover has restaurants for q3. Hopefully chase will do that category for q4.
