I just received and email from Marriott introducing a new way to redeem points – via points bidding. Many hotel and airline loyalty programs have started offering auction-style redemptions for unique experiences and it looks like Marriott is joining the bandwagon.Upon taking a look at Marriott’s new “Experience Marketplace“, there are various events and experiences you can bid on with your points ranging from exclusive culinary experiences, sports and lifestyle events, and even a cruise. While I personally think the best value for Marriott points is the Marriott Flight and Hotel Packages, I do think that some readers would appreciate an opportunity to attend an exclusive screening of the movie “Sully” in select cities for a flat rate of just 2,500 points for you and a guest on September 6.
Since I value Marriott points at around .08 cents each, 2,500 points is like seeing an anticipated frequent-flyer movie for $20 days before it’s released to the public. Unfortunately, an advanced-screening is not available in my city for 2,500 points, but I am definitely looking forward to the release of the movie! What are your thoughts on using points to bid for experiences? Have you ever participated in auction-based redemptions?

Sorry to be a pedantic math guy, but that should be .8 cents, yes?

Starwood SPG Program has been doing this for years. I guess MR is trying to be like SPG before they merger and ruin SPG !

No, actually it’s MR taking a page from SPG and improving the product. Since they are going to combine next year, might as well take the best parts of SPG and have them be permanent going froward.
